LION ROCK FARM

Positioned on a south facing parcel looking out at the Atlantic Ocean, our clients wished to build a home that would accommodate their active growing family. The house is a collection of volumes organized along a spine that is punctuated with outdoor showers, a family shower at the entry and private shower at the termination. This is truly an indoor outdoor house, for when the sun shines, the grand stainless steel doors slide open to extend the living space to the terrace. The massing is designed to protect the terrace from any harsh ocean winds.

The first volume is a garage, designed for everything but a car, with ample storage for bicycles, surf boards, paddle boards and kayaks. Extending out to the south is the master wing with a private study below and the owners’ suite/balcony above. The great room incorporates a cook’s kitchen, dining and living room with wood burning fireplace. Guest bedrooms, one with multiple bunks, can be accessed up the bronze and walnut stair at the enormous north facing window. The last wing is a private guest retreat with a bath opening to a private outdoor shower; this could be converted to a master suite in the future.

The exterior materials were both resilient and elegant. The foundation is laid up of hand selected granite lintels; the patio is sourced historic bluestone sidewalk pavers. The exterior siding is Alaskan Yellow Cedar tongue and groove for the main body of the house and Accoya rain screen detailing at the stair tower. The roof is standing seam zinc coated copper with built in gutters. Inside, the owners wanted a minimalist aesthetic employing high quality materials. The floors are a combination of quarter sawn walnut and natural stone tiles with a narrow linear bronze threshold between materials. Bronze detailing was used throughout at the fireplace mantel and wood box, the stair railings and kitchen shelf detail. Bathroom floors and walls are sheathed in stone slabs with custom floating vanities or trough sinks.
